Danube Day 2008 in Romania

Danube Day in Romania has something for everyone. With festivities and workshops in towns along the length of the river, there’s an event near you!

Bucharest Danube Day Festival (29 June 2008)

The centre for this year’s festivities is Bucharest. Here, on the 29th of June, a grand public festival hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development and partners will mark the launch of the Danube Box in Romania – a schools education kit to encourage young people to get involved in Danube issues. Contact anemari.ciurea [at] mmediu [dot] ro (Anemari Ciurea) at the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development for more information.

Across southern Romania, the Ministry, local authorities, environmental bodies, schools and sponsors are working together to ensure festivities take place in all the Danube counties.

Galati Danube Day (29 June 2008)

The town of Galati will see fun-filled awareness-raising events, led by the Eco-Counselling Centre of Galati (ECCG). Come along to the open-air riverside festival along the Galati River Walk and join an art master class led by local students; watch the awards ceremony for the Danube Art Master competition and learn more about Danube issues at stands showcasing water, health, ecology and navigation issues. The ECCG will also be on hand to provide information on recent pollution incidents including contamination of the Chineja stream (a tributary of the River Prut) and in the town of Tecuci. Contact eco [at] cceg [dot] ro (Petruta Moisi) of the Eco-Counselling Centre Galati for more info.

Danube Art Master schools competition (April-June 2008)

The Galati event will also exhibit the 137 artworks entered into the popular Danube Art Master competition which once again invited pupils to let their creativity run wild and make a piece of art inspired by their river. This basin-wide event, organised in Romania by the ECCG, encourages children to think and act for the Danube, a key goal of Danube Day. This year's theme focuses on the ways in which we can work together to manage land, livelihoods and the river environment for the benefit of all. Winners will be announced simultaneously by ECCG at the Bucharest and Galati events and across the region. Contact eco [at] cceg [dot] ro (Petruta Moisi) of the Eco-Counselling Centre Galati for more info.

Greet the Danube ship blast (29 June 2008; 14:00)

The sound of ship horns will reverberate across the Danube Basin at 14:00 on Danube Day, as Danube workers pay a very special tribute to their river. The annual Greet the Danube horn blast will see ships along the Danube from Germany to Ukraine simultaneously sound their horns in a salute to the rivers.
