Danube Day in Slovakia will focus on the recent severe flooding that affected much of the region in May and June this year. May rainfall was the heaviest since records began in 1871. Three deaths have been confirmed, hundreds of people have been made homeless, 1500 were evacuated from Košice and initial damage assessments exceed €268 million. As a result, Danube Day will feature a reduced but poignant programme in Slovakia.

Piešťany: Water Experts Meeting (10-11 June 2010)
During a two-day workshop, 50 water experts from the Ministry of Environment, Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute, Hydrological Service, GWP Slovakia and other institutions will discuss the implementation of measures outlined in river basin management plans. Flood prevention will be high on the agenda. Delegates will highlight the need to pursue an integrated approach to water and land management. The event will also focus on support for local municipalities and the need for flood maps at appropriate scales to aid local decision-makers. The development of an integrated weather forecast and flood warning system will also be discussed.
Danube Art Master schools competition (Ongoing)
The search is on to find this year's young Danube Art Master of Slovakia. This international schools competition, overseen by the Danube Environmental Forum and now in its seventh year, challenges every pupil in the Basin to create a piece of environmental art inspired by their local river. The only rules are that you should be as creative as possible and think about what the Danube means to you. If you need some ideas, check out the Inspiration page. To find out how you can enter the competition, contact Miroslava Rudá of BROZ (Bratislavské regionálne ochranárske zdruzenie) on +421 907 300 425; ruda [at] broz [dot] sk.
